What is faith? If you ask some people, they will tell you it is religion, like Christian, Jewish, or Muslim. Others may tell you it is self-confidence—"With a little faith, you can climb mountains." What is faith, really? What does God say faith is? When God talks about faith, it sounds like something very powerful. Jesus said, "...if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain: Remove from hence hither, and it shall remove: and nothing shall be impossible to you." (Matthew 17.20) He connected our faith with our words: "...whosoever shall say to this mountain, Be thou removed and be cast into the sea, and shall not stagger in his heart, but be believe that whatsoever he saith shall be done; it shall be done unto him." (Mark 11:23) He even said we are to have the same faith God has: " And Jesus answering, saith to them: Have the faith of God." (Mark 11:23) We are told nothing is impossible if we believe. Paul says in Romans 4 that Abraham hoped against hope and believed that the One Who made the promise was greater than the impossibility of the promise. The greatest example of faith was the Virgin Mary who faced being a social outcast and the possibilty of death by stoning because of being an unmarried mother and never even shuddered. Instead, she said, " Behold the handmaid of the Lord: be it done to me according to thy word." (Luke 1:38) Because of her faith, she did not fade into obscurity in the shadow of her Son, Jesus. Instead, she still stands as a model of faith and inspires men and women, young and old. Faith is so important to God that we are told in Hebrew 11:6 that it is impossible to please God without faith! Why? Simply put, faith is acting like God told the truth. It is "...the substance [flesh and bone] of things to be hoped for, the evidence [irrefutable proof] of things that appear not." (Hebrews 11:1 brackets indicate a direct translation from Greek of the preceeding words.) Paul said that "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17 KJV) This word of God is not the Bible, not an eloquent serman, but a person. John 1:14 declares, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." We know from previous verses that the Word is Jesus, Himself. Faith is all about a Person. It is not about new cars, or big houses, or high paying jobs. It is not about getting "stuff". Faith is about knowing and loving Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World and the King of the Universe. It is all about Him; it always has been. To Him be all glory and honor and praise forever. Amen. |

And Jesus answering, saith to them: Have the faith of God...Therefore I say unto you, all things, whatsoever you ask when ye pray, believe that you shall receive: and they shall come unto you.—(Mark 11:22, 24) |
